The sustainable management of stormwater requires arrange of diverse skills and disciplines which make the stormwater industry unique. Modern stormwater management has evolved from a traditional engineering and land planning focus to embrace other professional disciplines.
Stormwater runoff is widely recognised as a key threat to waterway health requiring stream morphology, environmental, biological and ecological expertise to recognise problems and develop solutions. Stormwater has an important place to play in developing urban amenity. In the past drainage practices have diverted water from urban vegetation. Increasingly landscape architects and urban designers are recognising the potential for stormwater to support urban vegetation. The key to sustainable urban design lies with careful land use planning to ensure environmental outcomes can be achieved. Integrated stormwater management in a supportive planning framework can provide water, support biodiversity and protect environmental assets. Local Government is responsible for the majority of drainage assets in urban areas in Victoria and across their organisation has the diverse range of skills and expertise to deliver integrated stormwater solutions. Stormwater Victoria draws its members from the following areas:
