Stormwater Victoria Excellence Award Winners 2010
Congratulations to the Award Winners and Merit Winners for 2010 Excellence Awards

STRATEGIC PLANNING OR CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

Coburg Principal Activity Centre Stormwater Harvesting And Reuse Project

Excellence Award to Yarra Valley Water in collaboration with Moreland City Council and Melbourne Water

The 'Coburg Principal Activity Centre Stormwater Harvesting And Reuse' project provides a realistic solution for compliance with stormwater management/water conservation/ESD components by individual developers and homeowners, who will have constrained sites in this part of Melbourne.  This is a creative catchment-based solution in a tightly developed urban area with no opportunities to retrofit larger scale elements such as wetlands.

Stamford Park City Farm

Merit Award to STORM_CONSULTING in collaboration with Knox City Council

'Stamford Park City Farm' is a far sighted design which hopefully represents a new standard in WSUD in terms of its different water elements.  This design is innovative in that it also includes land and water for on-site food production.  Overall the proposal is a creative approach to the use of this urban site.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Royal Melbourne Golf Club - Water for Irrigation

Excellence Award to Permeate Partners Pty Ltd in collaboration with the Royal Melbourne Golf Club

The 'Royal Melbourne Golf Club - Water for Irrigation' project represents excellent use of engineering, blending traditional and soft engineering practices including WSUD elements and state-of-the-art water treatment technologies. The project is an excellent demonstration of maximising stormwater harvesting together with groundwater harvesting and total water use. The project also demonstrates a commendable example of adaptation of existing infrastructure to achieve an innovative water management system.

Hereford Road Infiltration Basin

Merit Award to Yarra Ranges Shire Council in collaboration with University of Melbourne and Monash University (Conceptual Design), CPG Corporation (Detailed Design), Melbourne Water, Slate Plant Hire and M Tucker and Sons Pty Ltd (Construction)

The concept demonstrated by the 'Hereford Road Infiltration Basin' project has the ability to revolutionise rain garden design to not only manage stormwater quality but also stormwater quantity.  The project draws a strong link between protecting waterway health and the need to not only improve stormwater quality but also reduce the volume of stormwater discharged to waterways.

Main Street Extension, Broadmeadows

Merit Award to STORM_CONSULTING in collaboration with Outlines Landscape Architects and Hume City Council supported by Melbourne Water

The 'Main Street Extension, Broadmeadows' project is a very good example of seamless integration of WSUD into a streetscape project.  The project is well considered and realised, with dedication shown by stormwater engineers in working collaboratively with other disciplines to achieve a great outcome.

RESEARCH, INNOVATION, POLICY OR EDUCATION

Biofilta Stormwater Solutions - Next Generation Modular Bioretention Systems

Excellence Award to Cardno Victoria Pty Ltd in collaboration with

Australian Ecosystems Pty Ltd, Biofilta Stormwater Solutions Pty Ltd

The 'Biofilta Stormwater Solutions - Next Generation Modular Bioretention Systems' is an innovative and exciting development in the treatment, storage and management of stormwater in a small spatial footprint.  Significant concerns of the past, including biofilter life span, long establishment periods of vegetation, clogging systems and high maintenance are overcome and the system sets a new standard in stormwater treatment.  The Biofilta system has clearly identified a knowledge gap in the practical implementation of bioretention systems which is fully functional from the moment of installation.  It clearly demonstrates stormwater management principles and will make an important contribution to the health of key community assets.

Growing Up - the blueprint to green roof Melbourne

Merit Award to Committee for Melbourne

The 'Growing Up - the blueprint to green roof Melbourne' project demonstrates that planning, designing and building a green roof in the heart of Melbourne's CBD is not only possible, but once constructed, can also make productive use of urban stormwater.  A handbook 'How to retrofit a green roof in ten easy steps', developed as a part of the project, addresses an information gap on the construction of green roofs and will provide a useful reference guide for future projects.  The extensive involvement of a wide range of stakeholders as well as the publicity of this project is to be commended, and will contribute to raising awareness about stormwater management and harvesting.

Department of Health Stormwater Harvesting Toolkit

Merit Award to STORM_CONSULTING in collaboration with the Department of Health

The 'Department of Health Stormwater Harvesting Toolkit' is an innovative concept. It will allow councils and other intended users of stormwater harvesting, to carry out preliminary modelling to understand the stormwater potential of different sites in Australia's municipalities.  The toolkit has clearly identified a knowledge gap in this area and will be a welcome addition to the tools available for analysing sustainable stormwater solutions, to enhance community health and wellbeing.  Whilst it has only been used in a limited number of applications, it is anticipated that upon release this tool will make the analysis of stormwater solutions much easier for municipalities, thus facilitating the uptake of stormwater harvesting, leading to much broader application of these technologies.
